Bouchard Père & Fils

Founded in 1731 Bouchard Père & Fils is one of the oldest wine estates in Burgundy consisiting of 130 hectares of vines, and 450 different vineyards, which include a diverse range of prestigous appelations and single monploes of which 12 are classed Grand Cru and 74 as Premier Cru.

Maison Louis Jadot

The story of Maison Louis Jadot began in 1826 with the purchase of the Beaune Premier Cru Clos des Ursules. The label of Maison Louis Jadot’s wines are characterised by the instantly recognisable image of Bacchus’s head on the bottle.

Château de Santenay

Château de Santenay is one of Burgundy’s largest wine domaines. Its prestigious heritage, which comprises a remarkable 9th - 16th century glazed tile roof Château belonging to Philippe le Hardi, Duke of Burgundy. In 1395, the Duke signed the founding document for single varietal cultivation in Burgundy. The document was named the “Ordonnance de Philippe le Hardi”. Pinot Noir thus replaced Gamay as the varietal used for red wine production in Burgundy.

Domaine Famille Picard

Located in Chassagne-Montrachet, the Domaine Famille Picard was founded in 1951. In 1986, they acquired his first estate, Château de Davenay, renowned in particular for its Montagny 1er Cru "Clos Chaudron". In 1997, the family acquired its fifth estate, Château de Chassagne-Montrachet. 136 hectares of vines spread over 6 areas between the Côte Chalonnaise and the Côte de Beaune. The domain required significant renovation and modernization of the 1,000 barrels vat house. The family produces about 130,000 botles per year 60% red & 40% whites.

The Côte de Beaune produces Chardonnays with a more intense gold color. On the nose, they are dominated by intense aromas of white-fleshed fruit, with floral, creamy, and oaky notes. In the mouth, they are ample, smooth, and powerful. The Grand Crus of the Côte de Beaune offer unrivalled aromatic intensity and length on the tongue.

Cremant de Bourgogne is produced from traditional Burgundy grape varieties which are organised into two categories. First category : pinot noir, chardonnay (minimum 30 % of production), pinot blanc and pinot gris.

Terroir

There are 3000 hectares of the greatest “Grands Crus” wines located here. Santenay, Corton, Mersault, Puligny-Montrachet, Batard-Montrachet , Chassagne-Montrachet, Corton-Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet Pommard, and Mercurey.

History

The Hundred Years War had recently been brought to a close but marauding bands, pillaging and destroying, continued to provoke misery and famine throughout France. Beaune had particularly suffered from these crimes and was declared destitute. In 1443 Nicolas Rolin and his wife, Guigone de Salins, chancellor of Burgundy to Duke Philip the Good, built the Hotel de Dieu as a hospital for the poor and needy. It is one of the finest examples of French fifteenth-century architecture and is now Beaune’s finest museum.

Sparkling Bourgogne became well known in 1830 when it was praised by French poet Alfred de Musset. Savigny-lès-Beaune near Beaune was one of the areas, which specialised in sparkling red wine. Most of the volume in Crémant now comes from Chardonnay grown around Macon and Beaujolais and represents 19 million bottles or 20% of Burgundy’s wine turnover.  Veuve Ambal near Beaune is the market leader.

In fact the Cluny Abbey was just as famous for the delicious food the monks feasted on as it was for its devotion. You will eat well in Burgundy!
