Champagne Pierre Paillard in Bouzy

In Bouzy, Champagne Pierre Paillard explores the connection between a village, its vineyard plots and the wines made from them. Pinot Noir is central, but old-vine Chardonnay adds another perspective on these south-facing chalk slopes. The family’s work offers a way to understand why individual sites matter even within one Grand Cru village.

Eight generations in Bouzy

The family’s winegrowing story began in 1768, when an earlier Antoine Paillard acquired vines in Bouzy. Today, brothers Antoine and Quentin Paillard represent the eighth generation. Their approach combines that long family connection with an emphasis on organic vineyard work and attention to the soil.

A project begun in 2018 also brings in grapes from other Montagne de Reims villages. Bouzy remains the centre of the family story, but the wider range should not be mistaken for an expansion entirely through family-owned land.

A closer look at the Bouzy vineyards

Historic Bouzy holding

The historic Bouzy vineyard covers roughly 11 hectares. Southern exposure and chalk beneath the soil help explain the village’s importance. The estate describes this land as organically farmed, with careful pruning and attention to the soil.

Pinot Noir and Chardonnay

Les Maillerettes is planted with Pinot Noir, while Les Mottelettes has Chardonnay vines dating from 1961. These two parcels show why a village famous for Pinot Noir can also have an important Chardonnay story. A Grand Cru village classification does not mean that all its plots are identical.
