The tour begins in the city of Reims which is is 129 km (80 miles) east-northeast of Paris. Founded by the Gauls, it became a major city during the period of the Roman Empire. Today it is the heart of champagne production, most of the most well known champagne-producing houses, or "Les Grandes Marques", like Veuve Clicquot, Ruinart, Martel and Taittinger which have their headquarters in Reims, and are open for tasting and tours of their ellars. Champagne ages in the many caves and tunnels under Reims, which form a sort of maze below the city, carved from chalk.

Reims UNESCO Cathedral
Another highlight is the Cathedral of Reims. The UNESCO Cathedral of Our Lady ( Notre Dame ) in Reims is one of France's great masterpieces of Gothic art Construction started in 1211 and was the cathedral of coronations for French kings in memory of the baptism of Clovis by Saint Remi, probably on Christmas Day 498.
